These days, it is more work to build a ‘stepped contour’ topo model than one in it’s natural smooth state. The reason being that preparing the file for machining involves many hours of CAD time to add contour lines at each and every inside corner and outside or ‘top’ corner of a step. Thirty years ago, we would trace a map with a router on a sliding tripod. Today, we create a 3D surface file and translate that into program code, which controls the x, y, and z axes of our huge 5-axis CNC router. The result is very clean and precise—even when machining a piece of foam.
